Teaching Testimonials

Prior to entering the recording studio and just before a television appearance it was recommended to me that I undertake some vocal training. I contacted Hannah Bech Mathieson, scheduled some lessons and was very pleased with the results. My vocal range increased, I was able to sing better using the techniques and tools that we discussed. Consequently my confidence in performing was enhanced. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her services to anybody.

Hey Hanna,
This past Monday when I picked my child up from school, before he came to class with you, he said “I’m so glad it’s Monday!” and when I asked why he said “Because I get to go to piano, I love piano!” No exaggeration, he said he LOVED piano. Thought you would like to know, and thank you!
P.S. He doesn’t know I am sharing.

Five Reasons Hanna’s voice building lessons deserve 5 stars!

  1. It is SO relaxing! I was always so nervous to sing, but within 10 minutes of the first lesson I could feel my stress melting away. Now I CRAVE my singing lessons with Hanna like when you know you need a massage. It unwinds me totally.
  2. Hanna is a top notch teacher. You have to trust your voice teacher or the air just wont flow! She has broken me out of my bad voice habits by understanding my own personal learning style. She uses a slew of metaphors and examples to help you wrap your head around what she is trying to teach you. It works! I can already hear a HUGE improvement and each lesson is better than the last.
  3. I feel more confident. I have tackled head on something I was very self-conscious about. I was so nervous to sing in front of someone, but in the end I learned it wasn’t such a scary thing. It has made me reconsider other areas of life I could use some improvement.
  4. It improved my work. Really. As an RMT, the way your voice sounds in a quiet, tranquil room can make all the difference. After 30 minutes of the client listening to relaxing music, it helps that now when I speak, I’m not gurgling or scratching out “time to turn over” like I’ve just woken up for the day. I used to do a lot of seminars and public speaking, and would introduce the spa I worked at on the internal television station on cruise ships. I REALLY wish I would have had these lessons beforehand, I would have been much better at projecting my voice and sounding confident when I knew thousands of people were watching me speak.
  5. I feel like I’m doing something good for my body and mind. After voice, I feel like someone just handed me a nutritious ice cream cone! I also feel more connected and aware of myself and my surroundings. I believe singing releases your endorphins as well, which may be why I have at least 1 giggle fit during the lesson and why I feel so euphoric afterwards.

Now if only I could fit it in twice a week instead of just once a week…

“I have played guitar for many years and was now interested in also developing my singing voice.
Hanna has done a great job of helping me find my voice as well as broadening my range and strengthening my voice. She is very skilled at really hearing your voice and developing the specific vocal drills that will help you.
I highly recommend Hanna for anyone that wants to develop their voice and greatly improve their singing ability.”

It gives me great pleasure to write this letter of reference for Hanna Mathieson. I have known and worked with Hanna for several years, initially as her vocal teacher, and now as a mentor/colleague.

Hanna is one of the most dedicated people I know to her vocation as a teacher, and especially to her passion in teaching music. She brings to this her training in the pedagogy of teaching, which she uses intelligently, keeping the learning interesting, playful, and encouraging. She sets realistic expectations and challenges, and is creative in helping her students achieve growth in their musical skills, awareness and enjoyment. Her curiosity for learning and teaching is quite profound and makes working with her a delight.

Hanna is an honest teacher, in all aspects of her teaching and business. As any dedicated teacher knows they must do, she continues her own skills development as a commitment to her students. This is reflected in her personal vocal progress, which has been great, and now in what she offers her own students.

I think Hanna will succeed in any musical teaching endeavour she undertakes, and I’m pleased she is a colleague of mine from whom I too can learn!

To keep it concise, Hanna’s lessons are so much more rewarding than anything I expected. Knowing what my voice sounded like, and the low level of confidence I had when beginning to take her vocal lessons, left me with doubts. But it’s almost a few months later and I’m already feeling more confident, relaxed, and ready to explore the singing abilities I didn’t know that I had. I think the biggest thing for me, is not that I’m noticing a difference in my singing abilities, it’s that others are too. Hannah has a very comfortable set up and easy-going personality, it’s impossible to go through a lesson without having a good time. She is not only a high-spirited person, she’s extremely informative, patient, and knows just how to get you motivated.

As a teacher, I use my voice all the time, and it can be frequently under stress.
Working with Hannah has helped me strengthen my voice, and use it with less effort. I rarely ‘lose’ my voice anymore, as I often did when I first started teaching.
As an added bonus, I’ve also noticed that my singing voice is stronger, even though that wasn’t the initial purpose of my work with Hanna!
She’s friendly, accommodating and easy to work with.
Thanks, Hanna!

I’ve been told before that I mumble at times and don’t come in clear in everyday conversing. My work with Hanna was focused on expanding my vocal range and being able to articulate words with more expression. I’m not sure if it was the voice I wanted to develop or the speech I wanted to improve that brought me back to the classes but if I could point at one thing that drew me in every week it was the ‘rush’ I got from every session. Allowing my mind to focus on one thing for a certain amount of time left me with an after affect that lasted the rest of the day. It always put me in the right state of mind and I just wish I could be in that state every second of every day.

According to Hanna I’ve noticeably changed the tone in my voice and expanded
my vocal range all from practicing falsettos and the lower notes. One thing I know for sure is that I feel more comfortable and confident with my voice now than I did before attending classes. I would definitely recommend taking classes with
Hanna because of her superior knowledge in music and kind hospitality.

Parents

My daughter has been taking music lessons with Hanna Mathieson for the past 3 ½ years. She began lessons when she was 3 years old and has advanced so much in the time she has been studying with Hanna. In addition to providing piano and voice instruction, Hanna has structured her lessons to include all aspects of music. She is able to connect with her students in an individual way and teaches to their strengths and abilities.

Hanna has an aptitude to design and teach to each student’s ability. My daughter has trouble focusing when things are difficult but she is able to capture her interest by designing a lesson that is right for her instead of following a form lesson plan. The tips that Hanna has passed on to me regarding how my daughter learns have proven helpful in other areas of study as well.

Theresa

Hanna is a wonderful music teacher. She is very patient and child oriented. Hanna makes it fun for them which is important. [My daughter] has gained more confidence within herself when she is learning new and difficult things and we would recommend Hanna to other parents looking for a music teacher for their child.
